How do I join a Trust staff bank?

All three NHS trusts already have their own temporary staffing banks to cover shifts in their own services. What's new is that the West Yorkshire Staff Bank will advertise vacant shifts from all three trusts to a wider pool of staff.

To have access to these shifts, you will need to join one of the three trusts’ own staff banks first. This would usually be the one that covers the area where you live and is known as your Home Trust. To join, you will need to get in touch with the relevant bank staffing department, and you can find their contact details below.

If you are a substantive employee at any of the three trusts, you are also eligible to join the West Yorkshire Staff Bank. But you will need to make sure you are registered with your Home Trust staff bank first.

You can only have one Home Trust.

Shifts available at the three trusts are displayed and booked in the same way on EmployeeOnline. Log in to EmployeeOnline via the following links: Bradford District Care NHS Foundation TrustLeeds and York Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, and South West Yorkshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust.

You will only be able to book West Yorkshire Staff Bank shifts when you have met the terms of your Home Trust bank (for example, you will need to have worked a certain number of shifts). Are there any restrictions on where I can work and how many hours I can work?

You should only be able to see and book shifts for which you have the necessary skills and you should not undertake any duties during the shift which you do not feel able to perform.

For information about the maximum number of hours you can work in a week, please refer to your Home Trust's HR policies.

What do I need to do to prepare for a shift at another Trust?

We encourage you to find out more about our trusts, the services we offer, and the values and behaviours we abide by, by visiting our trust websites.

Bradford District Care NHS Foundation Trust
Leeds and York Partnership NHS Foundation Trust
South West Yorkshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust

When you arrive for your first shift on a new ward or in a service that is new to you, you will need to ask for a local induction. This will help you familiarise yourself with your new surroundings, helping to keep both you and your patients safe.

If your Home Trust is Leeds and York, you will need access to SystmOne and a smartcard to work shifts at Bradford and South West Yorkshire. This can be arranged via the Leeds and York bank office and should form part of your enrolment on the West Yorkshire Staff Bank.

Will I need any additional employment checks to work at other Trusts?

No. Your employment checks will be completed by your Home Trust staff bank and you will not need anything extra to pick up shifts elsewhere. However, you are required to be DBS checked prior to registration on the bank and you will be expected to maintain your registration with the DBS Update Service.

You will need to prove your identity by showing your Home Trust photo ID badge when you report for work at the beginning of your shift.

For more information about DBS checks and the DBS Update Service registration fees for each Trust, please refer to:

Bradford District Care NHS Foundation Trust bank staff intranet page
Leeds and York Partnership NHS Foundation Trust bank staff handbook

For South West Yorkshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, please contact the Bank Office via trustbank@swyt.nhs.uk or 01924 316192.

Will I need any extra training to work at another Trust?

Your training and accreditation records will go with you no matter where you work. For some roles, you may be asked to undertake short ‘top up’ training sessions to cover differences between the three Trusts. You will be paid for this training. Further opportunities for top up training may also become available.

However it is expected that you are fully compliant with your compulsory/mandatory training.

Will I be paid differently depending on where I work?

You will receive the same rates of pay as you would working at your Home Trust.

What uniform and identity badge should I wear?

You should wear the uniform provided by your Home Trust for any West Yorkshire Staff Bank shifts that require a uniform. If you’re not sure whether or not you need to wear a uniform, you can check here.

You will need to wear your photo ID badge provided by your Home Trust at all times while on shift.

Who will pay me, and how much will I be paid?

You will be paid by the Trust staff bank where you first registered (your Home Trust) in line with their payment schedules.

The amount you are paid for each shift will depend on the role you’re covering and the work you’re doing.

How do I access my payslip?

Payslips are electronic and can be accessed via Trust computers using your smartcard or via the remote access portal to your Electronic Staff Record (ESR).

I haven’t yet been paid for a shift I’ve worked, when will it be paid?

The total hours you work will automatically be submitted to payroll via the roster system once they’ve been finalised by the ward / team. You should raise any discrepancies or late payments with your Home Trust bank team, who will be able to support you to resolve this.

Once shifts are finalised, you will be paid in line with the payment schedules of your Home Trust. Managers are being encouraged to finalise shifts promptly to avoid any delay.

Please do this in writing and update employee self-service via MyESR. If you don’t let us know of any changes, this may affect your pay.

How do I cancel my shift?

If you’re not able to attend your shift for any reason, please contact your Home Trust’s bank office. If the bank office is closed, please contact the unit where you were due on shift. Contact details for each ward are available here.

While we understand that sometimes cancelling shifts is unavoidable, we do ask you to please be reliable. Regularly cancelling at short-notice or not turning up for shifts will be managed in line with your Home Trust policies.

What happens if my shift is cancelled by the bank?

If we need to cancel your shift and it's with less than two hours' notice, you will be paid a minimum of two hours pay unless alternative duties are offered. If you choose to decline the alternative offered then unfortunately you won't receive any payment.

How do I raise a work related concern?

If you have any work-related concerns during your time with us, please report them to the bank staff manager at your Home Trust in the first instance. They will listen to your concerns in confidence and will be able to advise you on next steps. The principles of the trusts’ Raising Concerns and Whistleblowing Policies may apply, and if relevant, you will be encouraged to follow these.

How do I leave the West Yorkshire Staff Bank?

We understand that people’s circumstances change and that there may come a time when you are no longer able to continue working on the West Yorkshire Staff Bank. If this is the case, please inform your Home Trust’s bank office. You can opt back in at any time, as long as you are registered with one of the three individual trusts’ staff banks.
