Rue with colleaguesYou can’t do it alone

Rue, a former nurse and health visitor, was head of service in Bradford when offered place on cohort 2 of the Fellowship Programme. She had lots of support from her team, line manager and directors within her organisation. Two of Rue's colleagues are in this picture with her.

Rue completed a secondment as associate head of children’s services as part of the Fellowship Programme. Following completion of the programme, Rue was supported once again and took part in an aspiring directors’ programme. She was then successful in securing her current role as deputy chief nurse.

The Fellowship Programme helped Rue to consolidate her learning and experiences. She felt extremely supported by Nadia and others in the System Leadership and Development Team. The team created a sense of community and still check in with others from the cohort every couple of months.

Rue said, “I would absolutely recommend the Fellowship Programme. Not just as a development opportunity - it will enrich you as a person and broaden your views. You can’t do it alone though. The support structures enable you to develop you to be the very best you can be. That support could be from your team, line manager or the programme. It’s also important to consider what is happening nationally as this has an impact. The fellowship enabled me to take more responsibility for myself as a leader and for others.”
