The West Yorkshire Staff Mental Health and Wellbeing Hub has been shortlisted as a finalist at the HSJ Patient Safety Awards 2025, in recognition of its outstanding commitment to improving patient safety and driving innovation in healthcare.

The Hub recognises that racial trauma still exists today and can negatively impact a person's wellbeing. The racial trauma training aims to develop understanding on what racial trauma is and the impact this can have on individuals.

In order to support people who are affected by this, it it important to develop our understanding on racial trauma and the impact it may have had on us. Witnessing your colleagues or service users who are affected by racial trauma may have had an impact on you and may bring up difficult emotions.

The training highlights that there is not a "right" way to reacting to racial trauma, but the first step is recognising it and learning about it. By learning about this, you will be empowered to deal with racial trauma in the context of work.

Carlyn Boyce, Clinical Lead for the therapy service for the Hub, has tirelessly worked with Hub colleagues over the last year to design and develop a training day focused on racial trauma. The training is evaluating well and has a current waitlist of 90 people.

Carlyn said: "I'm incredibly proud of the work we've done, but this hasn't been a solo journey. Adi, Ami, Charlene, Charlotte, Ellis, Emma, Nabiha, Sarah and Fabiola have been the heart of this work and helped at various parts of this journey. Their insight, compassion, and dedication have truly made this training what it is. I've been deeply honoured to work alongside them all."

This year's awards ceremony will take place on 15 September 2025 at Manchester Central. For more information about HSJ Patient Safety Awards, visit https://awards.patientsafetycongress.co.uk.
